Egg Rings vs Crumpet Rings: What's the Difference, and Which Do You Need?

An egg ring and a crumpet ring do the same basic job: they hold something round in shape while it cooks in a frying pan. The difference is the build. A typical egg ring is thin metal or silicone, a centimetre or two deep, usually with a folding handle, and suited to eggs only. A crumpet ring is deeper at 3cm, made of heavier steel, has no handle, and does both jobs.

If you're deciding which to buy, the honest answer depends on what you'll cook. Here's the difference in practice, what a crumpet ring does better, what a cheap egg ring does perfectly well, and the one thing an egg ring cannot do at all.

Can you use a crumpet ring as an egg ring?

Yes, and in a couple of ways it does the job better. The most common complaint with thin egg rings is leaking: the ring sits fractionally proud of the pan, and the white runs out underneath. A carbon steel crumpet ring is heavy enough to sit flush against the pan, so the egg stays where you put it. And at 9cm across, the ring is the same diameter as an English muffin, which is exactly what you want if you're building a proper breakfast muffin: the egg matches the bread instead of hanging over the edge.

The 3cm depth also gives you the option a shallow ring doesn't: a thick, deep round of egg for a stacked sandwich rather than a thin disc. Our guide to using crumpet rings covers the egg technique, plus drop scones, rosti and the rest.

The handle question, honestly

Our crumpet rings don't have a handle, and that's a deliberate choice, not a corner cut. No handle means the rings stack flat in a drawer, go in the oven without anything to melt, and have no hinge to trap batter or work loose. Lifting them off is a job for tongs or the edge of a spatula, and takes about a second.

Worth saying plainly: with a handled ring you're still reaching over a hot pan, and the handle itself gets hot on the hob. If all you ever want is a fried egg shaped in a ring, a cheap handled egg ring will do that job, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you the wrong thing. The case for a crumpet ring is not that it's a fancier egg ring. It's that it does more than eggs.

The one thing an egg ring can't do

Make crumpets. Crumpet batter needs walls: it climbs the ring as it cooks, sets around the bubbles that become the holes, and comes out about 3cm tall. Pour crumpet batter into a 1.5cm egg ring and it overflows the sides before it has set, and you get a sad pancake with delusions. Thin rings also sit unevenly and scorch on the hob heat crumpets need.

So the buying logic runs one way. If there's any chance you'll want proper homemade crumpets, or you've read our crumpets vs English muffins piece and fancy making both, buy the deeper ring once and it covers everything. Ours are made in England from carbon steel with a PFOA-free non-stick coating, and carry the same 10-year guarantee as the rest of the range.

Frequently asked questions

How do you lift a crumpet ring without a handle?

With tongs, or by sliding a spatula edge under the rim and lifting. The ring is hot either way, exactly as a handled ring's frame is after a few minutes on the hob, so treat both the same and it takes a second.

Do crumpet rings leak when you fry eggs in them?

Much less than thin egg rings, which is the usual complaint with those. Carbon steel has enough weight to sit flush against the pan, so the white stays inside the ring. A flat pan helps whichever ring you use.

What size egg ring do I need for English muffin sandwiches?

9cm. That's the diameter of a standard English muffin, and it's the size of our crumpet rings, so the egg comes out matching the bread rather than folded over to fit.

Can I make crumpets in an egg ring?

Not properly. Crumpet batter needs about 3cm of wall to climb and set around the bubbles that make the holes; a 1.5cm egg ring overflows before the batter sets. Depth is the whole difference between the two rings.

Are the rings non-stick?

Yes, a PFOA-free non-stick coating. Brush a little oil inside for the first few uses while the coating settles in; after that, crumpets and eggs release cleanly with barely any.

Which should I buy if I only ever cook eggs?

A cheap handled egg ring will do that one job. Buy the crumpet ring when you want one ring that does eggs, crumpets, English muffins and drop scones, built in England to last a decade rather than a season.
